I just fixed several Macs running Entourage 11 that
weren't able to see the Global Address List (GAL) via
LDAP and thought I would post my findings in hopes that
it helps someone else.
First thing I did was replace all server names in the
Account Settings with IP addresses. Since we are a
Microsoft shop and have an extensive Active Directory
structure, this step takes out some of the resolution
that the Mac OS has to perform, which could have
performance implications.
This did not solve the problem with the GAL. It wasn't
until I checked the first box under the Advanced settings
of the Directory part of the Account that says to provide
crendentials to the LDAP server. Checking this box and
saving settings did solve the problem.
I'm not sure what broke this communication - could be MS
security patch for Server 2003, Exchange 2003 or Active
Directory. Could also be an Apple security patch or
could be due to the upgrade to Office 2004. The reason I
think it was the upgrade to Office is that version 10.1.4
of Entourage doesn't have the checkbox for LDAP
credentials and I suspect it was implied by default.
Perhaps Microsoft didn't want to make that assumption in
the upgrade and left it unchecked.
Anyway, I hope this helps.
