Entourage Auto Quits

Email Client: Exchange

Hi all,

My boss's Entourage auto quits in the middle of the night. The laptop and Entourage stays open 24/7. In the morning, Entourage has closed and she has to re-launch it. Here's the weird part, this only happens when she is at her secondary home. The same laptop at her primary home is fine. I've already ruled out electrical as being the culprit. This leaves the difference in Internet connection. At her primary house she has a business level T1 (1.5MB) connection, while at her secondary house she has cable modem.

Any thoughts? Could having a "flaky" internet connection cause Entourage that is configured for Exchange to auto close?

Thanks,
Manny

Please do not double post. I see two other posts on this from you. We are
all volunteers here and when someone answers you and finds someone else has
already replied in another thread, you'll soon find yourself on everyone's
killfile list.

I got it. See my other reply for details. You don't need to double reply
either. In any regards do you have anything constructive to say? Otherwise,
let's move on! I don't need the likes of you to badger me for making an
innocent mistake! How dare you!!! ~m

OK, let's all calm down here. :)

Is it necessary for the laptop to run 24/7? That's a waste of electricity
and wear and tear on the laptop, unless there's some compelling reason.

I use the Schedule button in the Energy Saver Preference to shut my laptop
down every evening and restart it in the morning, shortly before my usual
wake up time. I have Entourage in the "Login Items" in my account (in
Account Preferences), so that whenever the computer starts up, it launches
Entourage, so my email is all downloaded by the time I get to my computer.
That way, I don't waste electricity running my computer all night when no
one is using it.

Shutting down and restarting also cleans up some of the system files and
memory, so that it reduces the number of crashes. I suggest giving it a try.

Hi Ed, All,

No compelling reason for 24/7 other than user's personal choice. The laptop
is configured for multiple users/profiles so therefore on startup it prompts
for user and password. Additionally, Entourage is configured to ask for
password at each launch. The user wants it this way for security purposes. I
take it that this will be an issue for Scheduling shutdown and restart, and
more importantly "Login Items" since there has to be manual entry of
credentials the computer will not completely restart and Entourage will not
update the emails??? Let me know.

Thank you all for trying to help.

Well, leaving the computer on and logged in to Entourage 24/7 doesn't seem
like a very secure solution to me! If someone were to steal the computer,
they would have complete access to the users email and other resources. Does
the computer require a password when recovering from sleep? If so, could
that be related to the Entourage crashes? Are there any useful messages
related to Entourage in the various system logs (accessible from the Console
App in Applications/Utilities)?

It is true, as you noted, that if both the computer and Entourage are
configured to require a password when starting up, then my solution will not
solve the problem.

Yes, the computer requires password once it goes into screensaver mode and
sleep mode.

With respect to that causing the crashes...I don't think so because we have
to remember that this is only happening at her secondary home and not at her
primary home.

Having said that, I go back to my original hunch...if somehow the internet
connection was "flaky" would that possibly cause Entourage that is configured
as an Exchange client to quit/close?

In the meantime, I will check the logs for anything meaningful.

Absolutely not. Entourage is either being told to quit, or it is
crashing.

So would it "crash" if Internet connection is flaky? (loss of internet connection).

Additionally, is there a setting that I can set so Entourage will not "crash" whether it is connected to Internet or not (i.e Offline)?

Thanks,

FYI - I was finally able to configure my test MAC computer. Every time I pull the Internet connection to simulate a "flaky" connection, sure enough Entourage crashed every time. The user did not tell me that there is window that pops up saying that it has to restart Entourage.

The question now is, does anyone know a setting/tweak so that Entourage will NOT crash or be so sensitive to a "flaky" connection?

Thanks,

Manny

Try selecting "Work Offline" from the Entourage menu before leaving the
computer for the day.
