Entourage & Exchange

Diane and John,
Thank you for the advice. It sounds like a hybrid 2004/2008 Entourage installation may work for me.

I am still reluctant to install 2008 because of the Entourage limitations, and I have just read that Excel in 2008 is a low-power version without VBA and other analytical features. If this is true, it is not clear if the improvements in 2008, i.e. docx, etc. are worth the loss of functionality in Entourage and Excel. Maybe I should just install Word 2008.

Again, thanks for your advice.

It's best to install the entire suite of applications. You don't have to use
them. One of the developers mentioned it could cause problems with future
updates.

As a consultant to educational institutions, including California County Education Offices, I am stunned to learn that Exchange support was stripped from Office 2008 for Mac Student/Teacher edition. After getting several organizations to install Exchange, primarily for the calendaring and contact list features, I now look like an idiot. Nowhere in the pre-release information did MS even hint that Exchange would not be supported in the student/teacher edition.

Frankly, this is the end of my willingness to recommend Exchange to any educational institution. MS consistently shortchanges these customers without warning, and I'm not interested in trying to work with MS's one-sided education license "negotiations."

You blew it big time on this one, MS.

Wow!
3 weeks ago I purchased a MacBook because I was so ticked off with Vista and felt it was time for a change.
Mac/Apple has convinced me to GO the BETTER WAY! But now I wonder.? I read...that there is problems updating contact lists from Entourage 2004 to 2008, Is this right?
Just to let everyone know I transferred my Outlook Address book to Entourage Student Edition and had no problems.
I am have other issues...like transferring the Folders and emails in those folders to Entourage. This will be quite a job to (somehow transfer) anyone got any ideas?
Also I am having a problem with setting up rules in Entourage...any suggestions?

Thanks for your assistance (in advance)

PS...so far I'm very impressed with My MacBook?

Has anyone come across a problem where only the contacts are not sync'in with Entourage 2008? i'm using a exchange 2003 server everything else is fine and have transferred successfully from Entourage 2004 although i'm not getting any contacts whatsoever.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Richard.

Richard,

Try using OWA to see if the contacts are visible there?

Also I've see contacts that were added using Entourage appear to have no
name when viewed using the Outlook client later (I have Parallels as well).
It appears that Entourage is not updating the Display Name field when adding
the contact.

I hate threads like this, but it seems to be the best place for my issues and question.

First, may I humbly suggest to someone at the MacBU that you coordinate with the Exchange team, and release an Exchange client for Macintosh (again) that is specifically designed to do that, and roll that client into a future upgrade of Entourage? That way the Exchange support would exist for users who aren't necessarily going to buy the standard MS Office, but exist in a corporate environment that has shelled out $$$ for the Exchange Server.

Second, my question. We have an email retention policy based on SOX legal regulations. Because of the nature of Entourage (even as an Exchange client), what would happen to email if our exchange server had a 6-month deletion policy? Would the email be deleted in Entourage, or would it stay because of the email database?

Actually it would have been better to create a new thread with a descriptive
subject line.

with the Exchange team,

Yes, because up until now they've been pulling Exchange support out of their
posteriors.

The MacBU works very closely with the Exchange team to provide Exchange
support in Entourage. Exchange support is a major part of Entourage.
Conversely, the Macintosh platform probably ranks pretty low on the priority
list for the Exchange team. So tell me, who do you think is bearing the
burdon of the coordination effort?

Entourage?

Not gonna happen. Entourage is what we have, we need to make it the best it
can be. There's a lot I don't like about Outlook, that IMO Entourage does
better. I don't want Outlook ported toi Mac (again).
That way the Exchange support would exist for users who aren't necessarily
going to buy the standard MS Office, but exist in a corporate environment
that has shelled out $$$ for the Exchange Server.

I don't understand the complexities of Exchange licensing, but my
understanding is that there's already a provision for providing clients for
Mac users. Someone else would have to explain in more detail.

Entourage syncs with the server. If a message disappears from the server,
the next time Entourage syncs it will disappear from Entourage - unless you
archive it in a local folder. The same thing will happen if you log into
your account using OWA or Outlook and delete a message.

When working in Office, you can use the ³Send Feedback² option under the
Help menu in all of the Office applications to contact MacBU.

Or... Visit the Mactopia Product Feedback link here:

Since I downloaded the auto update for Entourage 2.1.1 I cannot get my email from the exchange server. I have OFFICE 2008.

Any idea as to what I should do?

Too bad

This is really too bad - selling a new system - office 2008 which cannot run with exchange servers -microsoft is really considering us as fools - we do whatever they provide -pay more and get less!!!
What about some customer service???

My company uses public folders to manage our work flow. We categorize e-mails in the box based on content type. This is fine in Outlook, but Entourage does not pull the category information. I'm assuming this is a limitation of connecting via WebDAV rather than MAPI, or am I wrong? Is there a workaround to get it to pull the categories?

My job uses exchange only. I have Office v.X. Tried to set up Entourage, but exchange is not an option. Only POP and IMAP. Do I need to upgrade. I really don't want to spend that kind of money for one program.

Can anyone help me? THanks.

Outlook categories and Entourage categories do not synchronize with each
other.

Please be sure to let Microsoft know you'd like to see this feature in
future versions by using the Help --> Send Feedback mechanism in any
Office application.

Entourage X had very limited Exchange capabilities beginning with 10.1.4
and it required IMAP to connect to the server.

Definitely upgrade to get all the Exchange advantages Entourage offers.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

Will Entourage 2008 work with Zimbra? My company is looking to move to Zimbra hosted email to support our diverse Linux/Win/Mac, and I would really like to use Entourage for the shared calendars and free/busy searching. I currently have the home/student edition, but would be willing to upgrade if it would give me that functionality.

Thanks! Rob

Please do not hijack a thread. Start your own thread and use Zimba and
Exchange in the first words so they will show up in the subject name before
getting truncated. Now a really busy Exchange expert might see your subject
that will have some knowledge of Zimba and reply.
