Entourage & Exchange

Bill,
I'm not familiar with this service but when you log in to OWA are you
having to do any sort of customized or double authentication? In other
words, are you being taken to a customized webpage (not part of the OWA
login) and entering your credentials in that before being taken to OWA?
If that's happening then you won't be able to use Entourage. That's an
issue that should be brought to their attention.

Alas, no, it appears to just work on the OWA page. At this point, I've given up and am connecting via Outlook 2007 and VMWare. (And using Plaxo to sync that data to AddressBook and iCal, which was a big draw of Office 2008.)

I've been pretty disappointed with Office 2008 so far - came back on hoping for some news around today's updates. So far, it's been slower than 2004 in Rosetta (or 2007 in VMWare), crashes fairly often (even brings down OS X) and still doesn't connect to a seemingly vanilla hosted Exchange environment.

Still no word from LiveOffice, but we're looking to bring it all back in house after a few extended outages recently. Then the Exchange admin will be sitting outside my office and perhaps I can beat support out of him/her. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions though - this is a pretty robust resource overall.

Diane and John,
Thank you for the advice. It sounds like a hybrid 2004/2008 Entourage
installation may work for me.

I am still reluctant to install 2008 because of the Entourage limitations, and
I have just read that Excel in 2008 is a low-power version without VBA and
other analytical features. If this is true, it is not clear if the
improvements in 2008, i.e. docx, etc. are worth the loss of functionality in
Entourage and Excel. Maybe I should just install Word 2008.

Since E'rage allows for multiple Exchange accounts, I set up a duplicate to
my Exchange server using the OWA http URL, and it worked just fine. This is
with a fairly vanilla Ex2003 server. I'm not sure why others wouldn't be
able to do this, but using the OWA URL with Entourage 2008 is a perfectly
valid option.

Will Entourage 2008 work with Zimbra? My company is looking to move to Zimbra
hosted email to support our diverse Linux/Win/Mac, and I would really like to
use Entourage for the shared calendars and free/busy searching. I currently
have the home/student edition, but would be willing to upgrade if it would
give me that functionality.

Outside of the thread highjacking thing, not directly. What you *can* do is
to kind of backdoor it.

If you install the Zimbra offline client, then it will talk to Sync
Services. If you set E'rage to talk to Sync Services, then you can use Sync
Services as a middleman between the Zimbra Server and E'rage to keep things
sync'd.

This is infuriating. I purchased Home and Student not realizing this
limitation [of no Exchange support]. In fact, when I try to connect to
Exchange (note that the application HAS Exchange in the Account menus), I get
a message telling me that I need to upgrade. UPGRADE. The application says I
need to UPGRADE. You're telling me I can't. Well, my first Microsoft app for
Mac experience is truly horrible. Thanks.

Wrong wording. They should say get another version.

You might be able to get a refund from Microsoft. I wouldn't bet on this
being a quick process.

Microsoft will honor returns through the retailer where you purchased the
product or by contacting Microsoft directly:

AFAIK, there is no upgrade when you buy the Home & Student version. You
would need to go back to the store you purchased and ask if they would do an
exchange for you.

Might I recommend in the future that before you lay out money for a product
version, you do a wee bit of research to make sure that it does what you
need it to do. Even a minor bit of checking on microsoft.com/mac would have
revealed this fact for you.

Just be cool.

You have 2 good options:

1) use the Office 2008 student edition. If all you are doing is opening up word documents, it works great. What most people are bitching about is the fact that the Entourage no longer provides an email connection to Outlook that's like it used to be in the previous version. If you don't have this problem you are fine.

2) use the iWork package. You can open up most of the word docs with that. It's pretty easy to use and in a lots of ways more powerful. If you are more of an indy-professional then I'd go this way if I were you

There are some not-so-easy options but you sound like someone who gets irritated around Daylight savings time because you have to change all your clocks. So, I'll summarize by saying just ask people to send you a .pdf instead.

I'm a recent escapee of the Windows wasteland and was hoping that perhaps Microsoft had seen the future with its new effort at Office 2008 for Macs. After buying 6 Dells for my family over the years, it's Macs from now on. However, the limitation in the Home edition re using Entourage and Exchange is a real example of big corporate stupidity at Microsoft -- if the version is for home, then perhaps it should be realized that people at home would want to connect to Exchange servers. The smart move at this point would be for Mircosoft to come up with a reasonably priced upgrade (not a full product replacement that costs $200 more) for Entourage to add the Exchange feature. It won't happen because it probably would take MicroSoft 10 years to figure out how to do it, or the price would be too steep.

Has anyone noticed excessive sync-ing between Office 2008 and their exchange server. It seems every time there is an event (deleted mail, sent mail, etc.) Entourage re-syncs the folder.

Is there a way to specify the folder sync activity?

Thanks in advance.

I know this is an awful way to use Exchange, but I use Outlook 2007 with VMware Fusion. It is slow to load and does take up resources but it works and you can sync your tasks and such as well :) I am a recent mac user and would much rather use a fully integrated Entourage with exchange, but for now I'll wait for Fusion to load.

Hi Brian!

VMWare requires Windows as well. You might be interested in using
CrossOver Mac from <http://www.codeweavers.com> if Outlook is the only
or one of few applications you need from Windows.

Hope this helps!

Where can I find instructions on how to configure RPC/HTTP on Mac Office 2004? If I'm using student edition is there a restriction in terms of capabiliity?

Hi Jaco!

I'm not Andy but I can point you to these instructions for connecting
Entourage to an Exchange Server via OWA. Please keep in mind that this
is not RPC/HTTP. This is WebDAV. But it achieves the same results.

"Connecting Entourage to an Exchange Server from Home"
<http://entourage.mvps.org/exchange/exchangeathome.html>

Entourage 2004 Student & Teacher fully supports Exchange.

Hope this helps!

(rookie here) I jumped away from a PC and went to a MAC. I was not able to use Entourage for my e-mail because I was told that it was not compatible with the student version. So, I have been using imail for a few months until yesterday when I was asked if I wanted to do a couple of MAC updates. I said yes, do them now. Ever since my e-mail has been non-functional. So, after spending 3 hours on the line with Apple c/s I was told that they do not support exchange. So, I go back to the Apple store and plead my case that I was told over and over that there will not be any problems having a bunch of PC's on a server and me by myself having a MAC. They say that it is because of the student version. So, I say let's make this easy and I will now buy the regular version. My problem is that I can't get anything populated like e-mails, contacts, calendar. Can even send or receive... the error message says that it is a 18600. Anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this issue?

yes, after any change the change needs to be synced back to the server - I'm
not sure why you would expect anything else?

As I understand it, changes in Entourage are synced back immediately. If
there are no changes then entourage polls the server for any changes at the
server end every 2 minutes.

There is no way to change these settings.

Increasing Entourage Client Display Font Sizes:

Hi - I currently use a Macbook and would like to increase the default font size on the Entourage client display without changing the font of my outgoing emails (same as No Squint tool for Firefox). The Increase/Decrease font size under the "Format" option only applies to the current email preview and does not sticl or apply to others. Is there a way to permanently increase font sizes on the client? Note: the "font" sizes under preferences impacts the size of outgoing emails.

So i have a ton of emails and events in calendar saved...or should i say HAD. I restart my computer and all my data is lost. Entourage lost everything and started up as if this was the first time i used it. is there a way to retrieve all of that data...who knows what happened here?

> We have a bunch of Mac and PC users connected to Exchange Server 2003 -
> will we be able to use Entourage 2008 with Exchange 2003?

Have a look at "How Entourage 2008 works with different versions of
Exchange Server" on Mactopia
.
It compares using Entourage 2008 with Exchange Server 2003 and 2007.

Hope this helps!

Does the above mentioned list of Exchange servers mean that Entourage 2008 does not connect to Exchange 5.5?
