Entourage freezes during database rebuild

I use Entourage version 10.1.4 (c) 1995-2001 with Mac OS 10.5.5. It
was unexpectedly quitting. I deleted all the items in my deleted items
folder, but one item didn't delete (i can't see it in the folder, but
the folder shows an email there). I went online to find out what to
do... All the help forums seemed to suggest I had a corrupted data and
I should rebuild the database. I tried several times, including after
doing a safe reboot of my computer. But, I continue to get the
following when I open Entourage while holding down the Option key:

"preparing to rebuild 0 of 0" and it freezes forever.

In looking at the help forums again, it appears that I may not have
enough hard drive space for the rebuild, which would require some huge
amount like 500 GB... There has to be another option... Any help is
appreciated it's been 8 hours of searching so far... Thanks.

Sorry, but your best option is to rebuild on a big drive. If you can open
your Identity you can salvage your data.

This is happening to a client of mine, too. The database itself is 19 MB and I have about 100 GB of free space. It's not a space issue.

Entourage no longer even opens. How would I open my identity?
