entourage quits immediately on launch

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC
Email Client: pop

When I open Entourage, it opens the front screen, then tries to connect and log-on to the POP3 server. As soon as it detects any email to download it quits and I get the "Microsoft Entourage has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. This has happened right out of the blue, no new software, no strange emails. I was working in MS Word at the time. I've tried re-starting, but no luck.

Any help is appreciated. Please keep advice simple, as I'm not very technical!

Thanks

Try a rebuild first. Hold down the option key when restarting
Entourage, a screen will appear asking if you want to rebuild your
data base, do it.

I did this, and still have the same problem. What is your next suggestion?

Many thanks

Hold Shift key down when starting Entourage. This disables any schedules
trying to run. This allows Entourage to launch without crashing in
situations like this. You could then turn off Preview Pane and check the
server looking for the suspect message.

If you have POP accounts, you'd do it by using your Webmail account or use
Allow Online Access in the Options window of the account settings.

How to delete using Online Access: Select the server icon now appearing in
the Folders List and turn off Preview Pane. Delete the message (which
actually marks it for Deletion from the server), connect to the server (Send
& Receive All).

If IMAP, Exchange or Hotmail just check your Inbox and folders affected by
rules with Preview Pane turned off.)

I had the same problem, which turned out to be caused by rules being executed
(any rule). Try to delete/deactivate all of you rules and see if the program
still works. (You might need to quickly switch to the 'Progress' windows upon
executing Entourage, to cancel all progress before rules are getting
processed). Apparently, the rules bit is still somewhat buggy.

Hold the Shift key down when starting Entourage will stop any schedules that
are set to fire when opening Entourage.
