The changes will more than likely need to be made on your Exchange
server. Entourage X will rely on your server to run IMAP and SMTP
whereas Outlook relies on MAPI. If you upgrade to Office 2004 and use
Entourage 2004 then the connection will use WebDAV, which is the same
protocol used for OWA.

Take a look at this page on Microsoft's site for details
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/support.aspx?pid=exchange>.

Hope this helps! bill

Ya, I am using this configuration.
The changes that are required in present scenario is to have IMAP4 enabled
and started on your exchange 2k3 server.
Entourage uses IMPA4 to access mails and public folders, WebDAV to access
Free/busy data, LDAP to access Directory Service i.e. GAL. Also, GAL is not
browsable, though you can search for specific user names and so check names.

Is there a way to get Entourage 2004 to get mail immediately as with
Outlook 2001? Will there ever be IMAP support in Entourage?

Hi Alex!

If you're referring to MAPI instead of IMAP (Entourage already supports
IMAP) then more than likely the MacBU will not be supporting it in
Entourage. MAPI is a Microsoft proprietary protocol and Entourage
developers are resolute in using standards compliant mail protocols.
Therefore POP, SMTP and IMAP are supported. Exchange is supported using
WebDAV as a communication protocol.

As for getting mail immediately, I don't know if IMAP in Entourage
should continually poll the server or if it also relies on the Schedules
found under the Tools menu. You might try adjusting that.

You can also find much more knowledgeable Entourage people in the
microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage newsgroup as well.

Hope this helps! bill

Bill,

Thanks for the info. We have a bunch of Mac users that are second class
citizens to their Outlook windows brethren. In the end, Entourage is not
geared for a corporate environment the way that Outlook on the PC is, unless
we just haven't figured out how to do it!

Unfortunately, Macs are second class citizens in many companies. d:-(

As for Entourage not being geared for a corporate environment, that's
"yes" and "no".

Yes - Entourage is the Mac OS X Exchange client but it still has at
least one good round of upgrades before it will probably be ready for
the prime time corporate environment. And it will almost always lag
behind Windows because...

No - Entourage is not only geared toward corporate use but to home users
as well. In fact, it's geared toward a larger home segment than
corporate segment. Therefore, corporate needs won't necessarily be given
precedence in the development cycle.
