Erasing a excel file

I have an excel file that every time I tryt to earase it it tells me that it
can not be removed because it is being use by something else or it is
protected. The problem is I do not know where it came from. I have right
clicked and check the properties. I have rebooted in safe mode and still can
not remove it. Plus I can not open it with excel. Any ideas or suggestions?

Is it possible that the file was originally linked with another file
Just wondering?
