Error 2909 An internal error has occurred (MS office 2003 setup (XP)

Running Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 setup
I get the error.

Error 2909. An Internal error has occurred
({CC29EA39-7BC2--11D:-A921-00A0C91E2AA2})
Any ideas?

I discovered the error though I don't know how it happened.

My profile id is FINFER.COMHARLE

In the local environment variable TMP & TEMP it looked fine.

However upon translation of these local environment variables they
ended up as shown below.
see FINFER~1.COM

My guess is that something in Windows XP is making an assumption about
a .COM
(It started happening when uninstalled/reinstalled IE7 Beta 3, however
that might be coincidence)

When I discovered what was happening I deleted the local environmental
variables TMP & TEMP and the problem went away. I was able to install
office 2003 and other products also which was causing the problem.
