Error Message: "The appropriate graphic converter is not available

D

Dan

OS: Windows 2000
Publisher 2003

When i try to insert ClipArt into my Publisher Document I get a thumbnail
view of selected ClipArt with most if not all of them showing a "Windows
Media Player" (or a "Real Player" depending on your file type association)
box not the ClipArt. If you select one of the aforementioned ClipArt images
you get the following message:

"Microsoft Pulbisher cannot insert picture into publication. The Appropriate
graphic converter is not available".

I have every appropriate update and or drivers for every package on my
system downloaded.

I have installed the latest Microsoft Converter package.

Microsoft attempts to address this issue with Micrsoft Knowledge Article:
822518. The solution suggested by this article has no effect.

Does anyone know how to really resolve this issue.

Dan

Thank you for your quick response.

Unfortunately it did not help.

As a matter of fact;
after going to organizer, tools, compact and then selecting any web catagory
(animals) all the clipart now shows the "box" with the windows media player
icon. Of course trying to access the "box" results in the error i stated
above.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Maybe the Organizer is corrupt.
Find Mstore.mgc on your computer, it is a hidden file, it will be in a folder similar
to this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\Clip Organizer

Right-click your Mstore10.mgc file, click Rename on the shortcut menu, and change the
three-letter file name extension from .mgc to .old.

NOTE: If your computer is used by more than one person or has more than one profile,
be careful to rename only the Mstore10.mgc file that is in a subfolder of your
personal user folder (the folder with your login ID). If you are on a network, ask
for help from your network administrator if you do not understand how to find the
correct file.
4.Run Clip Organizer.

Clip Organizer creates a new Mstore10.mgc file automatically.
After Clip Organizer creates the new catalog file, you must re-import any custom
clips that you previously imported, and retype any clip property information that you
manually created.

What application do you use to view images? Are your file associations correct?

Time to run TweakUI and repair Icon associations.

Thanks again for the help.

But......

It did not resolve my problem.

I renamed the file as you suggested and organizer did create a new one but
they still had the windows media player display and would not let me access
the clipArt.
I had previously aquired the hotfix from you previous post and it had no
effect.

Interestingly, when i went into Windows Media Player and deselected a file
type of Mpeg (all other were set to windows media player) and then ran
organizier the files were still inaccessable but now displayed my nero icon.
Strange?

As far as file asssociated goes i have not touched it. If i go into a file
type wmf that is in the office portion of the organizer it is displayed fine.

If i go into a wmf that is in the Web portion of the organizer it give me
the problem we have been discussing. This is also true for jpeg type files.

Also, the wmf file type says open with application unkown when i check them
on my system.

So..... any further help would be appreciated.

It might be that your internet cache has become full beyond what Internet
Explorer can handle and/or corrupted.

I would suggest rebooting in Safe Mode, logging in as Administrator, then
going to c:\Documents and Settings\<Your User Name>\Local Settings and
deleting both Temp and Temporary Internet Files permanently (you can use
Shift+Delete to do this - it bypasses the Recycle Bin completely).

Reboot into regular Windows, and log on. Windows will recreate your
Temporary Internet Files and Temp folders for you.

D

Dan

Thanks for the help....

But again no help.

In fact Windows 2000 will not let me delete the Temp Internet Files Folder.
It is a system folder and required. It did let me delete the Temp folder but
this had no effect.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

you can delete it...it'll just be recreated when needed.

Thanks for the comments.... but i tried it again and it will not delete the
temporary internet folder in administrator (which is where i work). I tried
delete and sift delete, first it warns and ask if you are sure you want to
delete it, then if you select yes, it tell you it cannot delete it because it
is a necessary system file.

I always disregard the message...I guess I live dangerously...but it has never caused a problem deleting the folder as it will get recreated when needed.

Your images need a viewer association. When you double-click a .wmf what opens it?
Have you compacted the Organizer? Tools, compact...
You needn't delete the temp folder, simply move it. This sometimes helps.

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash Gordon®\)

slightly ot: why do they make the Organizer so hard to find on its own? I can never seem to find it manually when I want to.

Start, Microsoft Office Tools,
Drag the icon to the desktop and create a shortcut... Can't insert from it, but you
can drag and drop.

I've always been afraid to push the 'Catalog your entire harddrive button' though!

Thanks again;

This file association ( I do understand in general what it is) for other
applications was taken care of. Now i find by going into search and looking
for .wmf files and selecting one on my hard drive that it wants me associate
a program with it. Here is where i am confused. If i use my Organizer and am
viewing .wmf files that are on my Hard Drive it opens them with no problem
(thus i presume it is associated with them (prehaps this is just a temprorary
association while the program is active)). Yet the .wmf's and jpeg from the
WEB are not viewable (so we know that something to do with the IE or Web is
causing some sort of problem), and when i view the files properties whether
on hd or online they identify unkown as the association.

So; if i need an asociation to be preset:
1) Why would it not prompt me for it (It always has in the past in every
other program i have used)?
2) Which program would i associate with it?
3) Would associating a program with it cause addtional problems with the
programs that assume temperary association (Publisher, Word, PowerPoint, etc).

Any further help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Dan

You cannot associate files with the Organizer. To open independent of the Organizer
you need a viewer.

Have you tried associating the files to the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer." Better
yet download www.irfanview.com and the plug-ins. You can associate almost any image
with this viewer. (It is free!)
When you try to open a picture from the web, do you get an error or simply an
inquiry? Any Paint program will open a .jpg, the problem is you have to wait for the
program to open to view the image. This is why the "Picture and Fax Viewer" and
"Irfanview" are good, no waiting. Using these viewers will not interfere with your
other programs.

Stop RIGHT there.

The very first thing you need to do is create an account with a username
other than Administrator, and use that. It doesn't matter whether or not it
has administrator privileges, but you should most definitely NOT run as the
account with username Administrator.

(The reason I said to log on as Administrator was because Windows will not
let you delete Temporary Internet Files from your own logon account.)

Of course it will.
