Excel 97 does not work in windows XP (+sp2)

Excel 97 has been working without any trouble in windows XP, but after
SP2 was added, it will not start message saying "a file missing"
(which is the result of excel breaking down i.e. never starts at all.
Is there a log file? or does anyone knows what to do?
(I have reinstalled the program again to no avail).
