excel 97 not running in windows XP (+sp2)

When trying to reply in a thread, i get the message
Unable to retrieve message [email protected]
So unfortunately I have to post a reply in a new thread.

My excel 97 will not work in windows XP after I installed sp2.
I get a reply asking me if I have updated the program.
I did reinstall the program but to no use.

I thought that windows update did that (and I also ran the microsoft
baseline security ) but to no avail.

Have I missed something?

PS as to the "message can not be retreived, then why can the message
be seen ?
but it can not be retreived?
