Excel - I type 9-6 in cell and it automatically changes to 9 June

When I type numbers into an excel cell they automatically change to a date
and I want the numbers not a date.
How do I save my own entry?

Format the cell as Text prior to entering the text, or precede
the text with an apostrophe ('). The ' will not show in the cell,
but will in the formula bar.
