Exchange Server 2007 has ruined my life...

Hey everyone,

We have just upgraded from Exchange Server 5.5 to 2007. Supposedly we
can now use exchange accounts in Entourage 2004, but alas there is no
joy. And this is the beginning of our problems, I've listed them
below.

1. Not only does the exchange account not work but I constantly get an
error message "Unable to establish a secure connection to [mailserver]
because the correct root certificate is not installed". Any help here
would be great, I'm assuming the certificate needs to come from my
mail server but how do I get it?

2. Both IMAP and POP3 accounts on Entourage 2004 only see email that
has been delivered after the new mail server was commissioned. All of
our email history has be migrated to the new server from the old and
the Windoze users have access to it in the account however the two Mac
accounts only retrieve up to the activation of the new server.
(Current workaround is to maintain two IMAP accounts - one to Exchange
Server 2007 and one to Exchange Server 5.5, only we are decomissioning
the old server and cannot do this forever).

3. We have tried manually moving the files back to the server but this
causes the old mail to be date stamped at the time they are pushed up
to the server rather than the original delivery date.

Oddities, IMAP and POP3 accounts both send and recieve without
problem. I have access to the Global Address List even though I can't
connect the exchange account.

I hope someone out there can help because we will be adding two more
Macs to the system and out IT guys have no idea how to support the
Macs.

Thanks in advance
Jason

Hmm.. I installed E2k7 one month ago and have only minor problems..
1. Not only does the exchange account not work but I constantly get an

1. Read how to make a root-certificate for IIS on your Exchange machine
and for your company. You can use the certificate server on any
Win2k3-machine, I normally use the ad-master.
2. If you done this, export thoses keys and import them into keymanager
as x.509-anchors on every mac. You need the keys for the exchange-server
itself and for the anchor/company-root, so that the macs can trust the
root-authority and the machine.

We migrated from 2003 without much problems, so no idea, sorry.

Hi Jason!

My comments are inline with yours.

Wow! 5.5 to 2007. That's a huge jump considering that Exchange Servers
2000 and 2003 fall between.
1. Not only does the exchange account not work but I constantly get an

Are you sure the messages are still there or have been migrated
properly? If you connect from Outlook on Windows to the same client do
the messages appear there?

POP accounts typically connect, download and delete from the server.
Although it can be configured to leave messages on the server, that's an
unusual setup when IMAP is available.

Exchange 2000 introduced Outlook Web Access (OWA), which allows you to
use a web browser to access and view your email. OWA must be enabled on
the server for Entourage to work. Therefore, can you connect via OWA and
see your mail messages? If so, then Entourage should be able to see them
as well.
3. We have tried manually moving the files back to the server but this
causes the old mail to be date stamped at the time they are pushed up
to the server rather than the original delivery date.

connect the exchange account.

I'm confused. Can you connect to Exchange Server 2007 or not? Have a
look at these instructions on the Entourage Help Page to make sure your
settings look correct

Thanks for the help gentlemen, IT will be in tomorrow and we'll work
out the Root Certificate issue then using the info from "Mac Help Desk
Support Site". Which I must say makes more sense than the Office
Resource Kit we've been trying to get the info from.

In answer to your question Bill, I can connect to ES2007 with IMAP or
POP but have to keep signing in whenever I try to do something. Beyond
that all our history is not visable even when logging in through OWA.
We have tried to set up the exchange account but it wont respond at
all, and has (not connected) next to the account in the folders
window. My understanding is that if we don't have a working exchange
account then we shouldn't have access to the Global Address List,
which is why I mentioned this as an anomoly.

If we continue to have problems I will repost.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Jason!

If you don't see your messages in OWA then the problem is clearly with
the Exchange Server and not Entourage. This sounds to me like your mail
data was not migrated to the new server.

You don't necessarily need a working Exchange account to view the GAL in
Entourage. You do need a working Active Directory account. Its
information will be entered among the Exchange Server information in
Entourage. It's possible to set up a Directory Service by itself. You
should be pointing to a Global Catalog Server for LDAP searches.

Good luck! bill
