I created a 16mb .pub file. I can't email it to the
company that will print it professionally because its too
big. Zip doesn't do much to compress the file. Isn't
there a way to convert this or make it smaller somehow?
Can I do anything with Acrobat Reader if that's the only
Adobe program I have? Arggghhhhh!

WinRAR can split files up into multiple files, compressing them at the same
time.
www.rarsoft.com I believe is the URL for it.

And if a zip file does little to reduce the file size, it is doubtful that
PDF will compress much either. Especially if sending quality file for
professional output. Breaking it up seems the only option, except... doesn't
the "professional" have FTP to handle these files, rather than using email?
Just a thought.

Depending on your version, Pack and Go, under the File menu allows you to
break apart your publication into multiple disks for sending to a commercial
printer.

So can WinZip. I suspect most compression programs will do it - if
you read the help for for how to do it.

IIRC, WinZip only does this for spanned floppies, not for multiple local
files.

Use Pack N Go (on file menu)

That will compress it quite a bit.

Your Acrobat Reader cannot do anything for this.

Perhaps it's about time for you and your print provider to learn about ftp.
That is the proper way to transmit files, not as email attachments.
