Extend chart in Excel 12.2.4

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Hello, I've created a chart in Excel 12.2.4 Mac, in which I add data once a week and then chart it using a basic line chart. I found it hard to set up because I'm not very experienced in Excel but finally got it right.

However, this week, when I added some data and tried to chart it, it broke. When I dragged the blue drag handles to extend the chart area, it stopped all the dates from working - the x axis shows the first date only but with subsequent years; (so instead of going 14 feb 10, 21 feb 10 etc, it goes 14 feb 10, 14 feb 11, 12 feb 12 and so on); and the lines become straight, as though there's only one data entry, duplicated for each entry.

I hope that makes sense. It's a very simple data set and chart but I can't work out how to make it work properly.

Several ways to do it are summarised here:
