"Fatal error during installation."

David

I am trying to install the Trial version of OneNote, but I am getting "Fatal
error during installation.". I have a simple Raid1 Mirror as my boot (and
only) drive, and this appears to be the cause of the failure somehow. I have
heard of others with the same problem, but I know of no solution yet.

I tried installing from my same downloaded install file on another,
non-RAID, machine I have, and it works there (but OneNote is useless to me on
that machine), so I know my download is good.

Following are some details into this problem that I have investigated, in
case they are useful. If anyone knows of a solution or workaround (short of
getting rid of RAID), please let me know.

Microsoft, if you are listening, can you fix this install to work on RAID
configured machines? I really am interested in OneNote and will likely buy
it, but obviously not if it won't install on my machine.

Details -

Trying to install generates a file in temp - "Microsoft Office OneNote 2003
Setup(0001).txt". Towards the end of the file I have -

Also, before dismissing the error box, a IXP000.TMP directory exists in temp

Note that the localcachedrive is commented out and enforcecache is true.

I have tried copying this directory off (even to a CD) and installing from
it, but I get the same error. I tried modifying this .ini by uncommenting
localCachedrive and setting it to a directory, as well as setting
enforcecache=0. When I do this, I don't get the "Fatal error during install"
message, the install goes further, past the point of entering the key now,
and then it tells me the installation is corrupt and exits.

So, whatever this "localcachedrive" thing is about, seems to be the root of
this problem, and it is activated by a RAID configuration. Changing this
would fix it, but changes to the install are prevented. Does anyone know how
to workaround this issue or what localcachedrive is all about?

David, thanks a lot for the detailed post!
We are trying to repro this and would like to get more info about your
configuration in case the bug doesn't show in our environment. What is your
OS (type, version, patches)? Anything special about setup? What is the
hardware?

Irina,

I am running XP Professional, SP2, with up to date patches. The hardware is
a HP workstation xw4200. The C: drive (only hard drive) is configured as a
Raid 1 (mirror) drive using the Intel chipset 82801FR SATA Raid controller,
controlling two Seagate 160GB SATA drives.

I did a fairly detailed web search on this problem before posting here, and
the one common item (though most didn't realize it) that I picked out of all
the discussions that included their configuration information, was that they
ALL had RAID on their system. Also, the problem seems to date back at least
10 months.

Following is some more detailed info on my system. Let me know if you need
anything more.

I am getting the same error when I try to install Office 2003. Is
there any fix available for this?

What kind of machine are you running? How much RAM? How much free disk
space? What operating system? Do you have the latest service packs
installed? What antivirus software are you running?

I am receiving the same error when installing Office 2003 trial on a RAID1
configuration. This is an obvious issue with mirroring the data to both
drives within the RAID configuration. If the trial does not configure
properly, how do I know the FULL licensed version will??? Not wanting to
spend $400 to $600 on a software package that will not work!

Any updates would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks,
Bob

I too am unable to install the OneNote trial.

I am not using a RAID configuration as far as I know (its my office machine).

However it is a 64bit system that the installer fails on.

Mike T

I also receive this error when installing the Trial version. I have a 64bit
chip and a SATA drive. I have a second computer that is an Athlon CPU with
an IDE drive and it worked fine with no problems. Does this mean that I have
advanced beyond Microsoft?

M

Mike T

One more item of note, I tried the same test with OneNote and got the same
result.
It works fine on the Athlon 32bit and IDE configuration but not on the 64Bit
and SATA configuration.

I, too, am having this problem, and I really want to use this software. I
have RAID 0 installed on my system. Windows XP Pro, 320 GB total on dual
drives, 1GB RAM. Microsoft? Anyone out there? Help, please.

Then this sequence of errors/retries goes on for several more files, then -

Also, before dismissing the error box, a IXP000.TMP directory exists in temp
with the OneNote install extracted. At the end of it is the following
section -

[Cache]
; The cache section provides settings for caching the install source locally
; Value Default Description
; CDCACHE auto Option to specify cache level
; [auto, 0, 1, 2]

O.K., what you need to do is copy the entire OneNote installation CD onto a
rewritable medium (like a harddrive). Then find the Setup.ini file (in
\Files\Setup)and follow these instructions:

There will be a [CACHE] section in the INI file. The default setting for
LIS in this section is CDCACHE=auto. He will need to change this to
CDCACHE=0. Since it's not possible to edit a CD, he will need to copy the
CD to a folder on the hard drive before making the change. He should also
be advised that since he will not have source files on the local hard disk,
any installation of an update or service pack will require the CD. So he
will want to keep it handy.

You can download Winrar and extract the files to a directory. I tried
modifying the setup.ini file as described but that didn't seem to help.
I think I'm just gonna call Microsoft tomorrow and get a techie to

I am another who would like to utilize the MS Office 2003 download but the

The answer posted for relieving this problem is not working and does not

Like the others, I cannot install OneNote.

At my home computer, I downloaded the trial of Office 2003. Then downloaded
the Trial of OneNote. I had Office 2000 Pro previously installed. Both
installs went well. I purchased Office 2003 Pro, uninstalled Office 2003
trial and Office 2000 completely, did not uninstall OneNote, and then
installed Office 2003 pro. Everything works fine on this computer.

On my office computer, I had tried to install Office 2003 trial, but kept
getting the Fatal Error message. I completely uninstalled Office 2000 Pro
and installed a new copy of Office 2003 Pro. This install went fine. And I
applied SP2. I tried to install the trial of OneNote (since it is this
computer that I would buy OneNote and use it.), but I get the "Fatal error
during installation" message. I do not have a RAID configuration. The error
point according to the log says" Failed to determine local cache information
from Office Source Engine. LocalCache has failed. EnforceCache has been set.
Exiting...Shutting down chained setup processing."
I extracted the files to a Temp directory and changed the EnforceCache from
1 to 0. This allowed me to get to the setup point where I would input a
serial number. I input the serial number and than got the "Source File
corrupt" message. I re-installed the MSXML files as one KB article suggsted,
but this did not work. I uninstalled Office 2003, tried installing OneNote,
but it did not install. I re-installed Office 2003 Pro without SP2 and tried
installing OneNote again - no go.

There is not that much difference in the OS configuration and programs
between the home and office computer. I can't help but thing there is a
registry error somewhere.

Like everyone else here, I'd sure like to find a solution. I'm liking
OneNoe at the house, but can't buy it until I know I can install it.

Same issue. Same tests on 32bit vs. 64 bit IDE/SATA systems. Same result.

Six months since the issue was reported ... is there going to be a fix so
that we can download and try this product?

Like others, I have the same problem trying to install OneNote using the
60-day trial link from Microsoft's site. Looking at the log file, it appears
to be in determining the cache info . . .

Reading from "C:\DOCUME~1\Rds\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\SETUP.INI":
"Cache\LocalCacheDrive" (Default: )
Value:
Error 0x80070057
failed to determine if drive was removable: C
Error 0x80070057
Couldn't determine what drive to cache on.
Error 0x80070057
Failed to determine local cache information from Office Source Engine.
LocalCache has failed. EnforceCache has been set. Exiting...
Shutting down chained setup processing.

I have a Dell 8300 system 2.5MHz w/512MB, 120GB drive, XP Pro with SP2, MS
Office Pro 2003 with all updates applied.

Would like to try it out before I buy . . . but if 60-day trial doesn't work
???

Hmm. Over SIX MONTHS down the line and still no fix... A friend of mine just
bought a tablet pc with OneNote, and I love it. It would be great if I could
try it at home without time constraints. Same problems as these posts, and
many, many other posts elswhere. None of the solutions supplied here or from
other sites help. I've tried em *all*. Microsoft, are you listening? I'm not
about to shell out for OneNote if I don't know for 100% certain that it will
work on my brand new pc.

Athlon 64 dual core, single SATA HDD (no RAID setup), blah blah blah. Like
so many people with this same problem.

Come on MS, get your behind into gear. Please?
