"Fatal error during installation."

From the download. I've tried downloading it multiple times, unpacking the
..exe and altering cache settings, installing it in safe mode, disabling RAID
drivers, etc. I'm running Windows XP sp2 32bit, not 64. The only thing I
haven't tried yet is throwing in an IDE drive and installing it on that...

I am a PC Tech working for a Hospital VP who wanted One Note on an IBM
Thinkpad X41. I was having the same problem.

A System Admin helped me with this project and he found a way for One Note
trial to completely install. In "Add/Remove Programs" he uninstalled
"Microsoft Framework 1.1", "Microsoft Framework 2.0" and "MySQL Connector /
ODBC 3.51".

Installed One Note completely.

Then Both Frameworks were put back on the computer. One Note works!

No guarantee if this works for others, but my team got it to work this way.

Any thoughts?

I had the same problems as you. What I did was extract the onenote.exe to
C:\temp.
Change the setup.ini cdcache=0 and localcahedrive=c:\temp

Now things get complicated. Open the onote11n.xml and move the files to the
locations listed in the file and rename the files.
Example from onote11n.xml <File Id="DW20.ADM_1033" Size="34066"
MD5="9141F71815B3A1FE7B0647691D55C307" CacheLevel="1"
RelativeSourcePath="FILES\WINDOWS\INF\AER_1033.ADM"
RelativeCachePath="FILES\WINDOWS\INF\AER_1033.ADM">FILES\WINDOWS\INF\AER_1033.ADM</File>
Take the file you extracted to c:\temp\dw20.adm_1033 and move to a new
folder you create c:\temp\files\windows\inf. Now rename the file
dw20.adm_1033 to aer_1033.adm

Now do the rest as the xml lists.

good luck it worked for me.

I am trying to install the Trial version of OneNote, but I am getting "Fatal
error during installation.". I have a simple Raid1 Mirror as my boot (and
only) drive, and this appears to be the cause of the failure somehow. I have
heard of others with the same problem, but I know of no solution yet.

I tried installing from my same downloaded install file on another,
non-RAID, machine I have, and it works there (but OneNote is useless to me on
that machine), so I know my download is good.

Following are some details into this problem that I have investigated, in
case they are useful. If anyone knows of a solution or workaround (short of
getting rid of RAID), please let me know.

Microsoft, if you are listening, can you fix this install to work on RAID
configured machines? I really am interested in OneNote and will likely buy
it, but obviously not if it won't install on my machine.

Details -

Trying to install generates a file in temp - "Microsoft Office OneNote 2003
Setup(0001).txt". Towards the end of the file I have -

Reading from "C:\DOCUME~1\DAVID~1.STR\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\SETUP.INI":
"Cache\LocalCacheDrive" (Default: )

Retrying error for resource: DW20.EXE_0001

Then this sequence of errors/retries goes on for several more files, then -

Error 0x8007000f
Failed to get download cache path.
Retrying error for resource: SKU1A1.XML_0002_1033
Download retry succeeded
Finished CDCache Download, retrieving msi download info

Failed to get resource info.

Also, before dismissing the error box, a IXP000.TMP directory exists in temp
with the OneNote install extracted. At the end of it is the following
section -

[Cache]
; The cache section provides settings for caching the install source locally
; Value Default Description
; CDCACHE auto Option to specify cache level
; [auto, 0, 1, 2]
; LOCALCACHEDRIVE <predefined> Option to specify a drive to cache
; the install source to
; DELETABLECACHE 1 Option to display UI to remove the
; cache at the end of setup [0,1]
; PURGE 0 Option to always remove cache at end of
; setup [0,1]
CDCACHE=auto
;LOCALCACHEDRIVE=C:\
DELETABLECACHE=1
PURGE=0
ENFORCECACHE=1

Note that the localcachedrive is commented out and enforcecache is true.

I have tried copying this directory off (even to a CD) and installing from
it, but I get the same error. I tried modifying this .ini by uncommenting
localCachedrive and setting it to a directory, as well as setting
enforcecache=0. When I do this, I don't get the "Fatal error during install"
message, the install goes further, past the point of entering the key now,
and then it tells me the installation is corrupt and exits.

So, whatever this "localcachedrive" thing is about, seems to be the root of
this problem, and it is activated by a RAID configuration. Changing this
would fix it, but changes to the install are prevented. Does anyone know how
to workaround this issue or what localcachedrive is all about?
