favicon

I have been emailing my servers and asking everyone else I know about this

I do not seem to be able to get this icon to work, I have been told that
the icon is a HTML code !!!, how can it be when it is created by a icon
maker!!! anyway, after a few days of this I have now given up and am now
asking the newsgroup for some help.
hopefully some out there can get this to work.

the icon is called favicon.ico all lower case as it should be it is a ico
file it has the image I need, when it is saved on my desktop, the icon
that shows above the file name 'favicon.ico' is the icon itself. is this
right? it suggests that it is not a ico maybe, but in fact a jpg or gif
file? I really do not know.

does someone have such a file that I can use to test that my server is
accepting a icon file!!

thanks

Jason
(using FrontPage 2002 with Windows XP, server says that they do support
the ico file and that it should work)

Under windows an ico file, if valid, will display as the icon contained in
the file, so that part is OK.

Is the icon 16x16? It should live in the root folder of the web site. To
ensure all browsers utilize this file, you add a tag in the <head> of, at a
minimum, your index or default page ...

<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="favicon.ico">

.... or in subfolders, the path relative to (or absolute) to the file, ie...

<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://www.mywebname.com/favicon.ico">

You can download an icon from http://vbnet.mvps.org/favicon.ico if you want
to test one that works. Since my site uses frames, I only placed the <link
rel ....> line in the index.html page (the first line above), since the file
is in the same folder as the page.

Once that's set up, add the page to your favorites, then close IE. Reopen
IE and if the file "took", the shortcut you just created will have the icon.

Go here: http://www.x2studios.com/index.php?page=products&id=11
and download the free utility LiquidIcon XP ( has nothing to do with windows
XP )
and use it to convert your ico file to a genuine icon. It also has the
ability to combine 16x16 and 32x32 icons
into one ico file. ( like most icons are )

Then place the favicon.ico you create with it in the root of your web.

An icon must be created with an icon utility ... you can't just rename a gif
or jpg to .ico and expect it to work. I've never tried icon files with
multiple icon sizes, so if your file has such you might want to save just
the single 16x16 icon. I use Ifranview ... http://www.irfanview.com

My icon only works for me if I add my webpage into
favorites. I am also told that this is the only way for an
icon to work.

I tried Google, and it is the same case. Google's icon
only worked when I added it into my favorites. Otherwise
its icon didn't show up.

I hope this would help you.

Give me a link to your icon. I won't put it on my VBnet site, but I can
create another site on VBnet to test it.

That's correct. From the MSDN ...

Brand Your Favorites
Here's a no-brainer: If you want your logo to appear next to the link to
your site in the browser when users add your site to their favorites, just
add a file called favicon.ico in the root of your domain (e.g.,
www.microsoft.com/favicon.ico). Internet Explorer will automatically look
for this file and will ******put your icon next to all favorites and quick
links that come from your site******. If you can't put it at the root of
your server, you can specify another location on a per-page basis by adding
this tag to your page:
<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://www.microsoft.com/path/foo.ico">

ok, have a look at this site

www.testabcdefg.netfirms.com

it is the site that i am using to show that it does NOT work.

i have an icon that have been made for me by someone else in the newsgroup
(thank you to him) and this icon is 16x16 and it is in the root of my site
and i have also tried to add this extra html coding to the sites main page
(index.htm)

and......

guess what it still does not work

i have asked my service provider to make the changes to this site for me to
show me what i might be doing wrong, and await their reply.

i have also had others look at it and they all say that i have either got
the wrong icon file there or that the icon is actually a html file or it is
binary, and lots others reason why it wont work, but how come if i am
following the correct method to get it to work.

any other ideas,

i have been told that it should work on this site and there should be no
reason why it wont.

The file is apparently not there at http://www.testabcdefg.netfirms.com/myicon.ico
(gives me file not found)
- make sure it is in the root of your web (same place as your home page)
- rename it to favicon.ico (instead of myicon.ico) and the link becomes
<link rel="shortcut icon" href=http://testabcdefg.netfirms.com/favicon.ico">

Jason ...

I don't know about that. First off, your icon filename is favicon.ico and
it exists in the root folder of your web. Therefore, you have to change the
LINK REL to point to favicon, not myicon as that page does now.

As to not providing that feature, your host does have a FAQ on favicons
which by it's presence and recommendations indicates they do in fact support
this "feature". The page at
http://www.netfirms.com/support/NF/0d17c6dde488d6a523e71db6d7d2c20c?a=faq&nf_id=406
says:

------------------------------
How do I add a favicon for my website?

This document has been viewed: 144 times.

Below are some pointers when creating a favicon for your website :

1. Ensure that you have created your shortcut icon with the following size:
16x16 pixels
2. Save the icon with the default file name of favicon.ico in your website's
root directory (eg. www.yourdomain/favicon.ico where yourdomain.com is your
domain name)
3. Or you can also associate the icon with your Web page by saving the icon
with a file name other than favicon.ico and adding a line of HTML code in
the head section of your Web document. The line of code includes a link tag
that specifies the location and name of the file.

For example:

<HEAD>
<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.yourdomain.com/myicon.ico">
<TITLE>My Title</TITLE>
</HEAD>

To learn more on how to add a favicon to your site, please refer to the link
below:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/Author/dhtml/howto/ShortcutIcon.asp

-------------------------

Granted the example uses a personal domain name rather than a vanity name
tacked onto netfirms, but I'd be surprised if something as trivial as a
favicon is reserved only for paying customers. IOW, I wonder if the tech
support you received was incorrect???
