file conversion

when i am on the internet and i want to open a file on word it used to be ok
but now i get a box saying file conversion which one do u want to
use-windows,dos,other encoding.
i have tried all of them but all i get is a list of numbers,any ideas how to
fix please.

1. Version of Word?

2. Type of file you're trying to view in Word?

FWIW, what you describe indicates Word is not recognizing the file as somethign
it knows how to deal with...
