File Merging

N

Neil Jayasooriya

If I have a file and 2 users edit at the same time, Groove will save two
versions of the same file. Is is possible to merge the 2 documents, or does
any one have any ideas on how to work around this?

I think you are stuck with having to do a manual merge.

We get around this problem by using a "virtual baton". Any workspace member
who wants to update a document posts a message in Chat saying "I have the
baton" (or "I have the baton for such-and-such a document"). Other members
then know not to work on that file until the first person posts "Baton is
free".

Not particularly sophisticated, but it works well as long as people remember
to say when the baton is free.

There are special cases, when the files are locked. Groove detects the locks
for handling editing conflicts. For example, Notepad doesn't use locking so
only the last file that was changed are stored.

See Groove 2007 User Guide for more details (pg ~67-70 PDF version).

Another way to create such a "Virtual Baton" is to change the name of the
file the time you'd like to be considered as the one who edit... I am not a
specialist of Groove synchronization mechanism but I think that this kind of
modification as rather quick to be updated on all other connected accounts...

As an example, you can add you "Initiials" such as ADS for me at the
begining of the file or even better "ADS Editing" and therefore all other
connected members should see clearly who is "in"...

But even with such a clear message, you can forget removing the added text...
