File size too big

N

Neal

My wife is trying to put together a document. It is huge. Four pages over
500mb. It has lots of pictures (nursery school annual). I did a test. I
took one of her pictues (jpg file of about 80kb). If I use Powerpoint, and
do an insert file of that single picture and save the file it is about
117kb. If I do the same thing but a cut and paste of the same image from
photo editor into powerpoint and then save the file, it is about 2 mb.
However, if I do the same thing into publisher then the file is 5.5mb. As
you can see there is a huge difference. I got a copy of publisher 2003 and
the 500mb file shrinks to 144mb. The problem is that is is still way too
large. Her final product is a 20 page document. Is there a way to save
those images much more efficiently?

Thanks,
Neal

Neal,

Did you try to import the original file into Pub? Copy/Pasting images
should only be done as a last resort, not prime choice.

Which version of Publisher are you using?

Yes I did. When my wife tried to move from her old file (500mb) to the new
file (144mb) she used Publisher 2003 (newly installed) and did a copy and
paste. When I did my test with publisher 2000 I did an import of the jpg
file.

If using 2003 and I do a file import and then save the file it is 117K. If
I use 2000 and I do a cut and paste or an import file the saved pub file is
about 5.5meg.

As I said in int ititial posting. I was using publisher 2000 and then I got
a copy of 2003. It seems better in 2003, but if you look at the other
postings, it looks like my wife might have to completely recreate the
document by re-importing all the files using 2003 to make the document
smaller and perform better.

Neal,

Well, you know the saying - if you want to make an omelette you have to
break a few eggs! :)
