file size with graphics in it

I have a file with losts of graphics in it. They are gif format. The original file has graphics from English software which I am replacing with pictures of the French software. My problem is that the file size if 3 times bigger with the French graphics in it even though they are essentially the same picture. I am simply using the insert picture option anddeleting the original picture and replacing it with a new one. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or how I can make this file smaller?

Have you tried saving those French images first in GIF them inserting into
Word?
