File to Application linking

When I select a Word document there's a long delay in the
opening of the Word application (about 40 seconds)after
which it opens the file and I can work with it. However,
when I access the document through the application it
comes up immediately. I occasionally get error messages
regarding 'Kernel32.DLL' and 'Msgsvr32.DLL'. Not sure if
they have anything to do with my problem. This problem
also seems to exist with Excel but not with Powerpoint
which was purchased separately.

My Word application is the 2000 version.

Can you suggest anything?
