I find several files inside a folder that have
~$filename; ~$filename.tmp
why does the system write files under ~$ (prefix)?

I understand how suffix extentions .jgp etc are used
but the prefix is a mystery.

Have I set some option that allows these files?
How can I turn off the options so my folders are not
filled w'unwanted files.

Hi Bill,

These are temporary files, called Owner files, that Word creates when
you open a document. They should automatically be deleted when you
close a document. However in the event of a crash the temp files will
be left behind. If found they can be safely deleted.
