Files disappear

I have installed Msoffice 2k and everything with the installation goes fine. As soon as I click on "ANY" of the icons (word, excel, etc...) the window comes up shows itself, and then disappears back to my desktop like it was never there! I have uninstalled, reinstalled, cussed and still have the same problem. What am I doing wrong. I am running XP Home. Have all updates. Please help!
