I'm creating a doc in word 2003 from an avery template. My fill color is
grayed out. I've adjusted view to print layout and outline. I've changed my
options in tools under print to include color backround. any other ideas?

If you're not applying a background fill color using
Format->Background, then the fill color tool is only available
when you have an autoshape or drawing object selected.

You're my hero! Thanks! I've been working in PrintShop so long I forgot about
your recommendation. It worked perfectly.

If it's an Avery template, then it's probably for labels or something
similar, in which case it's a table. As garfield-n-odie says, the Fill tool
is available only for AutoShapes. For tables you need shading. You can apply
this from Format | Borders and Shading, or, if you display the Tables and
Borders toolbar, there is a Shading Color button (with the same paint can
icon as the Fill Color button on the Drawing toolbar) that you can use.
