Filling a number or text field

In MSProject, is there a way to fill (in this case, down a column) a custom
field with a series of numbers (e.g. 1,2,3,...), much as one would in Excel?

Hello,
There is no automatic incrementation like in Excel. But a small VBA
procedure could do that if the number of rows deserves it.

A lazy option is to use excel to create the list using the auto populate,
then cut and paste into the project custom field

Seconded. Cut and paste from excel is a great method.
You CAN drag (fill down) the same value in project. The keyboard shortcut
CTRL_D will also do the same in Project as it does in Excel.
