Filtering for null values

A filter test value of "" doesn't work, as in Predecessors -does not equal-
"". A clumsy workaround is -is not within-, but is there a simple way?

Andrew,
If it's the Predecessor field, I've used the following:
And/Or Field Name Test Value(s)
Predecessors is less than 1
