Finish-to-Start link not calculating new start time

F

Foxy

Hi, I have read the discussions about FS links and how there cannot be any
date constraints in order for the automatic calculation to work. I have
checked out my tasks and insured that there are no date constraints
(everything is ASAP) and that automatic calculation is turned on. Yet, the
task that I have specified to start when another ends does not get
recalculated to that starting date. It remains where it is, previous to the
starting date.

I have something like:

* Summary Task A
* Summary Task B
* Task 1
* Task 2
* Summary Task C
* Task 3
* Summary Task D
* Summary Task E
* Task 4

I am trying to link Task 3 Finish-to-Start to Task 4. But Task 4 does not
move! Help!

Fist thing to check is in the Tools Options menu, Calculation page and make
sure recalculation is set to automatic.

Hi Foxy,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

(Steve - Foxy said calculation is on automatic). Check the summaries as
well for any constraints and make sure none of them have precedence links.
You say you're "trying" to link the tasks - did the link succeed? If
necessary, email me the zipped file and I'll have a look.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :))

Steve, I read another discussion on this topic where you went through the
options settings, not having dates hardcoded, flexible contraints: and it
seems that I have done everything right, but still the tasks do not move, no
matter whether the update is automatic or manual and I hit F9.

Missed that

Sorry - didn't spot that in your post at all. Old timers disease setting
in! LOL

Just to complete this... Foxy sent me his project and the tasks in question
had actuals on them so project couldn't move them to where he wanted them.

Hi Foxy,

I've had exactly the same situation recently. Literally, none of the bars
moved, although I'd input data changes. A colleague opened the file whilst I
still had it open, and he said that things had "moved" in accordance with
what I'd done. We still don't know why it did it, but I had to close the file
and re-open. Everything was then fine!

Cheers.
