fix the gantt chart...

Hello,
I have a basic question on the Gantt chart and start and finish dates.
Say I have a task, 16 hours.
In the resource usage view I put the task for 5-11 and 5-12.
But back in the gantt view, lets say the start is 2-23 to 5-12
If I try and put the start to 5-11 then the end goes way out (weeks out).
even though the task would fit in the time.
I have my task set to fixed work. because I want the work to remain 16
hours.
is there a way to shrink the duration to a more compact date range?

thanks

Are you perhaps confusing durartion and work?
Work (16 hours) is accomplished over a duration period (2/23 through 5/12).
When a resource is assigned to the task, they are assigned at a % of their
availability.

For default, a task of duration 5 days with 10 hours of work assigned to
Barney will result in Barney's units % = 25%. In the default, if the task
type is Fixed Units, then changing a start date will alter the duration such
that Barney is kept at 25% utilization.

Try looking at [Task Type] from Window/Split in the bottom pane. Your
choices are Fixed Units, Fixed Work, Fixed Duration. Each behaves slightly
differently.

Let me give a scenario from my plan.
I have a task 1.
Work = 2 hrs task type = fixed work
In the resource usage view, I put the 2 hrs in the week of 3-22.
But back on the Gantt view the start = 3-2-2009 finish = 3-27-2009 duration
= 5 days

now if I switch the duration to 1 day
the start stays at 3-2-2009 and finsh changes to 3-23
If I switch the start to 3-19 the finish goes wacky to 4-8

Is there a way to shrink the duration and start/finsh to fit my actual work
on the resource usage view?

thanks for any help

Hi,

Does the task have a must start on constraint?
Does it have a value in Actual Start?
