Form Field in Word 2003

I have a document that has a form field for merging on the first line of text
in the document. When I use the lock feature on the Form toolbar the data
for that one field will not merge. If I leave it unlocked the data will
merge properly. What could be the issue with that one field. The other
fields are ok.
