Formatting applies to whole document

For some reason that I don't understnad my version of Word (2004
version 11.3) has started applying most formatting instructions to the
whole document, for example underlining a word or making it bold,
applying bullet points, numbers or indenting a paragraph, sees the
whle document underlined or in bold etc. For some of these
insturctions if I hit the reverse arrow, taking the document back one
instruction, the single word is left as I wanted it, but for some
instructions, bullet points for example, the document goes back to the
point before I highlighted a word or paragraph so I can never have
just 2 or 3 lines bullet pointed.

How can I stop this.

With the cursor in some text that shows the problem, go to Format |
Style. Click on Modify. Uncheck the "automatically update" box in the
Modify dialog. Check the "add to template" box to prevent the problem
appearing in future documents, although you may have to repeat this
process in old documents that also show the problem.

For an explanation "why?", see here--written for Word 2002, but somehow
Word 2004 absorbed the bug.
