Forward and backward compatibility

Is there anywhere I can find what versions of Office documents can be read in what other versions? For example, will Word 97 read a 2000 file? an XP file? etc. Does 2003 read all the way down to 97? 95? I know Project 98 does not read project 2000. Is that typical or unique? Thanks.
