FP 2000 on XP dies on file save

I installed my FP 2000 on my computer running XP
Everything seems fine until I try Saving a file on my site
The "Save as" window opens and begins populating the directory tree - very
slowly
after loading all of the folders (roughly 20 - 30) it begins populating the
files in the root folder
(Still slowly) after it gets to about the 3rd or 4th file, Frontpage exits
completely and I'm back to my Desktop without any filesave, or a chance to
enter the filename to save as.

If I click on "Save" rather than save as it does the exact same thing
opening the "Save as" window.

I can Publish - and everything is ok, I just can't save the file.

The first thing I did was to reinstal the Frontpage Server Extentions - No
improvement
Second - I repaired Frontpage - No Help
Then I uninstalled Frontpage and Reinstalled it - No Help

Finally I tried watching to see what filename was being populated in the
window when it dies,
I renamed that file and tried again - it still died at the same point.

Any help with what to try next?

Borrowed from Stefan:

Start by cleaning out your IE Temp files
Then try the usual repairs in the sequence below:
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server
Extensions\Cache
3) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
4) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
5) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,
6) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
