"Freeze" Section Breaks

R

Hello,

I am creating a template for a long document. The goal
is to have users just "click and type".
Problem: I have section breaks to have the first page of
each section have page numbering appear center bottom and
the remaining pages top right.
Currently, if a user types from the first page of the
section they will "push" the section break onto
subsequent pages and mess up the page number location.

Can I "freeze" a section break on the first page so that
a user can just type and not worry about messing up the
page number setup?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

No. you can't freeze a section break, but you don't have to do that to
get the effect you want.

First remove the unneeded section break at the end of the first page.

Put a page number field in the header of the existing section, and
leave the footer blank -- the way you want page 2 to appear. Go to
File > Page Setup, on the Layout tab, and check "Different first
page." That gives you a first-page header and footer that are separate
from the ones that appear on the rest of the pages of the section. Put
a page number field in the first-page footer and leave the first-page
header blank.

When a user creates a document based on the template and types enough
to start a second page, the number in the header will appear there,
and the footer will be empty.

See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/NumberingFrontMatter.htm for
more information.

One more word of advice: Don't use the Insert > Page Number menu item.
It puts the number into a floating frame, and that can cause problems
later. Instead, use one or two tabs to place the number centered or to
the right, and then use the Page Number button on the Header/Footer
toolbar to insert the field directly in the header paragraph.

Thank-you very much!
