going back from Access 2003 to Access 97?

Sean McLaws

I am running an XP Pro machine that already had Office 2003 Pro installed
(all components) and I need to be able to fully operate Access 97 mdb files
with out converting them (in a shared invironment) (Access 97 is not
currently installed but I have my CD) Can anyone give me any suggestions

Not quite sure what you're asking.

Access 2003 can open Access 97 databases. It can't, however, make changes to
forms, queries, reports, etc. unless it's been converted to at least Access
2000 format.

You should be prompted as to whether or not you want to convert. Choose No
if you don't want to convert. If you don't want to be prompted, see

Thanks for your response.

To clarify, I need to beable to manipulate Access 97 databases (shared with
an application that requires Access 97). My computer was given to me with
the full Office 2003 Package installed. I need to know how to get passed the
roadblocks Microsoft has built in so that I can run MS Access 97 (either
concurrently or in place of MS Access 2003

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

I have no idea what you mean by "roadblocks".

I have Access 97 and Office 2003 Professional (including Access 2003)
installed on my laptop, and I can use both versions of Access concurrently.

Have you tried installing Access 97? Sometimes you might get an error
message to the effect that there's no license for Access 97, but that's
easily fixed following the instructions in
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=141373

Of course, you do need licenses for both versions. If, for example, you've
got an Upgrade Version of Office 2003, then your copy of Access 97 is no
longer licensed.

Douglas,

I really appreciate your help on this. I have Access 97 installed. When I
try to open a n mdb file, it never fully opens. I get "file" "window" and
"help" menu options, and "ready"in the status bar but no data base is open.
I als do not see the typical icon in the corner of the window... more like a
problem notification window icon (not sure what it is called). Ido not seem
to get any error messages... just nothing happens. I have heard that it is
really hard to install the two (MS Access 97 and 2003) in reverse order... ie
2003 first (what i reffer to as "roadblocks").

Additionally, I can not get any of my 2003 db's to open either......

doug, i am new to this board, but perhaps this will help, if you are not
sorted yet. You can use both systems. Access 97 can be reinstalled. There is
an issue with a font called hatten.ttf which Sean referred to.

If your database window is open, but you can't see anything then try window
unhide.

The file window you mention is asking you to select an existing dbs. These
will probably not load as they will not be access 97 format. There is an
other option new dbs, which will open a file save dialog and ask you to
create one. If you cancel all these option then you just get a blank dbs
window, which sounds like what you have, in which case file, new should let
you create a new dbs. Hope this helps

Although I see I had a problem here! <g>

That should have read "Um, I wasn't having any problems, eddy. I was
answering Sean!"

Ahh, perhaps you meant:

"Houston, we have a problem"
"Houston, we have a PROBLEM"
"Houston, WE have a problem"
"HOUSTON, help!"

<chuckle>
