Graphic Object Layout Woes

First of all, Happy New Year to the group!

After placing clip art objects into text boxes so that they push the text
aside to make room for the objects, it is a frequent occurrence that after
working with the publication a while, I lose the layout format for the
graphic and the clip art inexplicably just sits on top of the text and
obscures it. <- Sorry about the run-on sentence.

Have no idea what I'm doing that is causing it and how to correct it.
Playing with the layout boxes for the clip art object results in no changes.
