Graphics don't display in Publisher 2002

Graphics, including pictures, lines, text box borders, etc., are not showing
up when I open my documents in Publisher 2002. If I try to add a graphic, it
is not accepted. I just converted to a Windows XP machine -- everything was
working fine under my old Windows 98 system. What's going on?

You probably need to update your video driver...

If View, pictures, detailed display doesn't work, do this

Slide the acceleration down on your adapter, control panel, display folder, settings
tab, advanced button, troubleshoot tab... If sliding down the acceleration solves
your issue, go to the manufacturer's web site and look around for an upgraded driver.

I downloaded the latest driver from the Dell website and installed it. I
still get the same problem. I then uninstalled Publisher and re-installed it.
I'm still getting the same problem. I cannot insert any photos or graphics or
line borders on text boxes. However I can get the border art to work on text
boxes. Also, when I open my document, I get a message that the font was
unavailable and a substitute font would be used. As I said, I had no problems
on my older Windows 98 computer in which I originally produced these
documents. On this new XP system, neither new nor previously created
documents are working out. I'm getting nervous with a monthly newsletter due
in 2 weeks. Thank you for any help.

PS: The document seems to print o.k., the graphics just don't display on the
screen.

Did you try turning down the hardware acceleration options under Control
Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced?

Publisher 98 saved printer information with the publication, not only that you
created the files on a Windows 98 operation system and the printer probably did not
have XP drivers.
Try this
1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
3.Click Print Spooler, and then click Stop on the Action menu.
4.Start Publisher, and then open your publication.
5.Switch to the Services dialog box, click Print Spooler, and then click Start on the
Action menu.
6.Close the Services dialog box.
7.On the File menu in Publisher, click Print.
If you receive a warning that a printer for this publication cannot be found, click
OK.
8.In the Name box, click the printer that you want, and then click OK.
9.On the File menu, click Save.
Publisher saves the new printer settings with the publication.

Have your tried "detect and repair" under help?

Office XP has service packs, have you installed them?

Some of your old files may have WordArt, the WordArt changed in 2002, you can
download the compatibility tool.

Yes I did slide down the 'Hardware Acceleration' under Control
Panel-Display-Settings-Advanced-Troubleshoot. After sliding down one notch at
a time, it finally did appear to work o.k. at the 4th notch down from the
right (highest setting). Previously, I had only taken it down 1 or 2 notches
and it still didn't work. Now my question is: is it not possible to take
advantage of the fancy accelerator card that came with my new computer if I
want to use Publisher? (I really don't want to have to keep switching the
settings). If not, has this problem been solved in the latest version of
Publisher?

The problem is not technically with Publisher, but rather with your video
drivers.

Do you know what card is in your computer? Is it a Dell desktop or a Dell
notebook?

It is a Dell Dimension 4700 running Windows XP Home edition, installed with
Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, Intel 82915G/GV/910GL
Express Chipset Family, driver version is 6.14.10.3889. The newest driver I
could find on the Dell website was dated almost a year ago.

Ever since I adjusted the hardware acceleration, my screensaver has been
replaced with a floating text box which says: "Could not find any compatible
Direct3D devices". I cannot change the screensaver. Now what do I do?

Mary,
I downloaded the latest driver when you first suggested it (7/27/05) from
the Dell website, but it was the same as the one already installed, dated
8/20/2004, Version 6.14.10.3889.

Do you know what graphics card you actually have installed?

Ed,
The only info I have on the type of graphics card installed is what appears
on my invoice: "Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900", Dell Item
No. 320-3872, Part No. 00009. It's a new computer, Dimension 4700 desktop. I
would assume many tens of thousands of these computers have been sold with
this graphics card and with the same driver, and that many of those users
have Microsoft Publisher installed. Am I the only one with this problem?

This is not a particularly swanky graphics card, just to let you know.
You can check the type of graphics card by right-clicking My Computer >
Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > Display Adapters.

No, you are not. Dozens of users report this issue in this newsgroup every
week.

Mary,
I went to the link you provided.
I found the graphics driver Version PV14.15 for my Intel 82915G Express
Chipset.
I downloaded the driver (WIN2K_XP1415.EXE file).
I tried to run it, but got a message that "this driver cannot be installed
on this hardware". It then exited setup.
Any suggestions?
