Graphics don't show up in Reader version of Word PDF

I am creating an ebook from a MS Word 2000 file, using Acrobat 5. After converting the Word file to PDF using either the Word PDFmaker plug-in or Acrobat Distiller directly, I used Acrobat to insert a jpeg cover graphic into the file. The cover graphic (and the jpeg author photo included in the original Word file) show up fine in the PDF when viewed/edited in Acrobat, but when I save the PDF and open it in Acrobat Reader 6, the graphics are only gray rectangles

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions are appreciated
