groove file sync

i'm new to groove but haven't been able to search an answer - when you edit a
file and it syncs back to everyone - do the changes show differently? i.e.
versioning - so you can see who made what changes - until a final doc is
decided upon? is there a way to secure that so one designated person has
final rights? or do they have to be renamed every time - the only problem
being that people will forget and just save - we don't want to lose the
original and want to easily keep track of edits.

Hi there,

There is no check in or check out functionality and no merging functionality
in Groove. Only versioning and then you need to manually merge the versions
into the final document.

I'm assuming you are talking about storing files on SharePoint and the sync
of them.
Here's what we do to somewhat work around this in Groove:
1) I modify the project defaults so that normal users can sync and add
files, but NOT the other options (modify, delete files). I.e.
properties...permissions...participant: Synchronize an Add files/subfolders
2) I bump the sync schedule as fast as possible (1 hour)

It's by no means perfect, but the methodology is then:
* folks can still drag/drop files into groove to easily add them to a
project (and at the worst it would be 2 hours until everyone receives it (up
to an hour to sync up to SharePoint then up to an hour for others to sync
down to workspacs...)
* To modify files people have to go to sharepoint (where we have sharepoint
setup to force a checkout/checkin for any modifications). After
modificaitons it can be up to 1 hour until everyone's groove workspace is
updated.

So we're now 100% safe and collision free, with the downside that you can't
just modify files from groove...

Cheers,
MEM
