Guidelines for creating a help manual?

W

I need to make a 'help desk' document/manual of everything I do at work so
someone can step in for me in case of...whatever. How do I go about
organizing the info for this? Is there a template I can use or an article to
help me decide what to include?
I have Office 2007 and am working in Vista.

We can help you with the applications you can use to create the manual. The
content is strictly up to you.

JKW...

I know what you mean - you'd like a template with some headings, even if it
was blank. I'm working on something like this as we speak. It won't be ready
until a few weeks, but I know there is a need for help desk and tech writer
material as templates; just the headings so that it acts like a guide and you
can fill in the blank. I just happen to be a technical writer and create
manuals every day of my life! Don't cry for me! Haha!

There are TONS of manuals of the Internet. Many 'BIG' company's post their
info online, so you can download them even in PDF format (Dow Jones < they
have great manuals)...

SO until I can help you further, here some quick tips of what I'd do (and
have done frequently when I'm in a bind and don't know where to begin):

Start research on Bing and Google:

1. Search for Help Desk Manuals 'enter help desk' manuals.
I'll bet you $50 that some company has their full help desk manual online.
Also since this is YOUR JOB stuff, you might check a few HR sites. I didn't
quite understand how you meant 'help desk'.

a) Do you run a help desk and you'd like to document what you do to do that?
OR...
b) Are you trying to write a JOB MANUAL that describes your day to day
operations and you are calling it 'Help Desk'...

Regardless of your answers above, definitely research for the term Help Desk
Manual. Also, remember, many HR MANUALS are online as well, so do a search on
JOB MANUAL...YOU COULD...just look at an existing PDF online, then copy down
the headings, then put it into Word and fill in the blanks for your own job...

Sounds like to me you are seeking direction on structure; like 'how to'
write it and NOT what to write, as I think the other respondent thought. You
want a template to GUIDE you through the process of documenting your JOB...

Check back in a few weeks! I'm going to a JOBS MANUAL "Day to Day" Job
Manual! Such a great idea!

Good Luck!
