guides for image placement

As in PowerPoint, it would be ideal if Word had guides for precise placement
of images. There is a grid, but since you can't pull guides off the rulers,
you still have to guess.

Experiment a little with Word's functionality. You don't need to guess. You
can --

1. Hold down the ALT key while moving the graphic -- you are then not
constrained by the grid, and the ruler tells you the precise position.

2. Define your own grid, to whatever precision you want to work to.

3. Set the precise position through the Properties > Layout dialog.

Thanks for your response, however, although it is helpful it doesn't
completely solve my issue.

Yes, the horizontal ruler can give you some guidance, but I haven't found a
way to align along the vertical ruler, other than using the layout options.
These are still not as precise as I need, for example, of I'm aligning a text
box, then I have to deal with the inherent space between the text and the
text box.

I've already been able to release the grid, I was complaining that the grid
does not give you any positioning measurements. I am comparing files created
in Quark Xpress that I need to place graphics and text in the exact same
location in Word. guides would do the trick.

I realize that and I do my darndest not to work in this software under any
circumstances. However, I have a client with a need and I was trying to
fulfill it.

In what way is this a problem. I do it all the time, to a precision of 0.1
of a millimetre, which is greater than the precision of the printer. The
space between the textbox and the text is a setting on the layout dialog.

This is silly. It's like complaining that you can't load a container onto
the back of your pick-up, like you could in the good old days when you drove
a real truck.
