header autotext corrupt

T

Tony DBQ

I have a computer that when a certain user logs in and uses the header/footer
option and tries to add autotext the text appears as square boxes. When
other users login header/footer works just fine. I was thinking of renaming
her profile and letting it create a new one but would like to keep that as a
last resort.

Any help would be great.

You shouldn't have to do anything as drastic as recreating the whole
profile. That would be a horrible disruption for very little gain.

The header/footer AutoText is stored in the Normal.dot template, and
each user has a separate template. With Word closed down (and Outlook
as well, if Word is the email editor), find the copy for the affected
user -- by default, it's in C:\Documents and Settings\<login
name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. You may have to set
Windows Explorer to show hidden folders in order to see this location.
Rename it to OldNormal.dot. Restart Word, and it will build a new
Normal.dot template.

If there were any customizations (styles, toolbars, personal AutoText
entries, or macros) in OldNormal.dot that you want to keep, go to
Tools > Templates and Add-Ins > Organizer and copy them to the new
Normal.dot.
