All autotext choices now gone...help

Lee

I have to review several documents a day. Each is saved in Word (by different
director) and is saved onto a network shared drive. I open up the file,
review it, and at the bottom of the page...but NOT in the footer area... they
want me to enter in the filename/path and inital. For the first few months I
was able to simply go into Insert>autotext>header/footer>and then select
"filename and path". This would put in all the info I would (and save me
time).
Now, for some reason, i open up the file (like every other time), and go to
Insert>autotext>header/footer...however it doesnt open up past this and just
shows this tiny little box. In fact I cannot go/open any of the autotext
opions such as Closing, Signature or any other one.. they all have that same
blank little box. What happened?!?!?!
My coworker (and pretty much anyone else) can go into the shared folder adn
open up the file and they can still go and use the autotext option but on my
computer it's giving me that little box with no options. Did something
happen? Is there a set/properties issue with my Word (2003)????

Note that the AutoText entry “Filename and path†simply inserts a FileName
field in your document. You can easily insert the field via Insert > Field.
In Categories, make sure “(All)†is selected. Click “FileName†in the list,
turn on the “Add path to filename†check box (and I would turn off “Preserve
formatting during updatesâ€). OK.

It may be even faster to type the field:
1. Press Ctrl+F9 to insert a set of field braces (you cannot type the braces).
2. Between the braces, type:
FileName \p
3. Press F9 to update the field (if this does not toggle field codes, press
Alt+F9).

It sounds like the user's Normal.dot was replace with one they created. IOW,
they created a document/template, made some changes, and then saved the file
as Normal.dot and replaced the original Normal.dot. Only Word can create a
"true" Normal.dot which includes the default AutoText entries, such as
Filename and Path.

To correct the issue, locate Normal.dot and rename it to OldNormal.dot. Word
will create a new one upon starting. If the user has customizations, such as
AutoText entries, styles, macros, etc, they can be copied to the new
Normal.dot using the Organizer found under Tools/Templates and Add-ins. If
they don't have any customizations they wish to copy (or after the
customizations have been copied) the OldNormal.dot can be deleted.
