Not possible.
OE cannot export to a PST format.
What did you really do?

I have two.pst files called backup.pst and outlook.pst
which i am pretty certain that i exported from outlook
express...however since i posted the message I also found
a folder containing my .dbx files which I presume are the
folders for outlook express. Yet I can't seem to get
outlook express to recognize them (on this computer, which
is not my own)....???

Oh yes it does - in fact a pst file is the ONLY format Outlook express
will "export" to. You must have Outlook installed for it to work
however......

Your contention, then, is that Outlook Express can create a PST file (the
original poster's claim)?
News to me.
Tell me how.
There is absolutely no way he created outlook.pst and backup.pst from
Outlook Express.

I don't think that's rifleman's contention at all, but I agree he worded his
reply poorly. What I believe he's saying is that by exporting from OE to
OL, messages will appear in your PST. This isn't exactly correct, however,
as you know. OE's exported messages will appear in whatever the primary
delivery location is: a PST file without Exchange, and Exchange, if that's
where your messages are delivered.
