Help with Master pages, please

Hi, I am trying to work with the Master pages so that specific styles and
elements can be applied to specific slides. This way when a change is needed
I can make it on the Master to make a global change. I need 3 master pages, 1
formatted the title page, 1 formatted for the body, and 1 for divider pages.
The page numbers need to be consistent with the body and divider pages; there
are graphical elements that are needed on the body page but not on the
divider pages.

I can get the title and body master with no problem but I have to get a
third one in there for divider pages this is the problem. I can make it but
then I cannot find it to apply it to specific slides and does it need to have
the connector bar to the other masters?

In the past they did not use Masters but it makes life so much easier that
is if I can figure out how to get the third master to work. As usual I am
running out of time.

Any and all help is truly appreciated I have been trying to find the answer
and cannot.
Thank you
MJ

Hi MJ,

Yes, this is exactly what Masters were designed to do. When used correctly,
they can make your life easier.

Now, getting to the specifics.
To use multiple masters, you must be using PowerPoint 2002 (XP) or 2003.
You can read a multiple master presentation with 2000, but if any changes
are made while still in 2000, it can bollix up the entire presentation.

If you are in PowerPoint XP or 2003 and in the Slide Master view (View =>
Masters => Slide Master) you can create as many masters as you need (up to a
limit of 124 Slide Masters and their associated Title Masters). Their is a
relationship between the Title Master and the Slide Master, in that the
Title Master will copy the elements on the Slide Master when it is created.
These elements are then independent between the Title and Slide Master,
meaning that once the Title Master is created you can change just the Title
Master without changing the Slide Master.

The association between the Slide and Title Master is shown using the grey
sideways U shaped line that joins the two. This allows PowerPoint to switch
between these two Master types by just changing the slide layout in the
Slide Layout task pane. Slides that use either the 'Title Only' or the
'Title' layout will follow the Title Master of the associated Master pair
while all the rest will follow the Slide Master.

However, you can choose which Master (or Master pair) any slide will follow,
by changing the slide design in the task pane. This way your divider pages
can follow an independent master than your Title and regular (body) slides.
Just create a new Slide Master and assign the divider slides to this new
Master

The Slide numbering in PowerPoint is sequential, period. It can start from
any whole number from zero to 9999, but always runs sequentially by ones up
from there. All slides are counted in this numbering, regardless of if they
are Title slides, hidden, or follow a different Slide Master.

I hope this answers some of your questions. Post back if any of it is not
clear.

Hi Bill,

We are using XP. I just want to clarify a few things. Does each Slide Master
need a Title Master and do they need to be in pairs? Then once a separate
pair is made, should it show up in the layout section, is there a special
place where the custom layouts go, so that I can select and apply that Slide
Master? I have tried renaming a Master that I needed to use, I thought that
would make it easier to find but I can never find it.

Thank you for your time and information. I need to master the master pages.

Hi Again,

Help
I am in Power Point and have made 2 sets of masters, where can I find the
second set to apply it? I have been looking in the "Apply slide layout:".
Nothing I am doing is working.

Each slide master does not need a title master, but each title master does
need a slide master. You might as well make them in pairs and forget about
which needs what. :)

Once a separate pair is made, it will show up at the top of the design
template task pane in the section "used in this presentation." Naming them
differently is a good way to help tell them apart. You might also want to
right-click the master in the slide master view and choose "preserve
master." That ensures that this master will stay in the file even if you
don't have any slides using that particular master.

I DID IT, I finally figured it out. I kept looking in layout for the
masters, they are not there. They are in the Design Templates.

Thank you once again for everything. I bow to the Masters of Power Point.

Thank you, this helps to make the Masters a bit clearer. Fully understanding
them makes life so much easier.

Thank you once again.
