Hidden or read only properties?

Hi,

Is there any way to have a custom hidden property (one which the user
does not see) and/or a read only property (one which the user cannot
change).

For example: It would be nice to have some sort of property that is set
in the diagram that indicates that the user has validated the diagram.
But I don't want the user to be able to edit this variable/property.

Also, I would like to have a property for a Shape that the user cannot
change.

Any ideas on how to do the above?

What exatly is the differnce between user-defined Cells and custom
properties??
