Highlight changes

Vote Kerry

If I make a change in the Gantt, is there a way to
highlight what the resulting impact this change caused?

My plans are quite intricate and large, and so if I make a
change to a task in the Work column for instance, ideally
I'd like to see highlighted the resulting changes in other
tasks.

Thank you.

I presume you're referring to start and finish dates.

Others may have a better approach but this certainly works.

1. Tools | Tracking | Save baseline ... | Save Iterim plan and choose
Save Start/Finish in Start1/Finish1.

2. Insert column Flag1, rightmousebutton on the column header and click
on Customize...

3. Click on the formula button and enter the line below:
([Start]=[Start1]) And ([Finish]=[Finish1])

4. Click on OK (to exit the formula entry) and then click on the radio
button labelled "use formula" (immediately below the Formula button and
click on OK.

5. Set the AutoFilter to ON.

6. Make your changes.

7. At any point while you are making your changes, simply click on the
autofilter triangle at the top of the Flag1 column and select No. This
will display all those tasks that have been changed.

If you do this sort of thing regularly, record the keystrokes in a macro,
attach the macro to a button and with a single-click you'll be ready to
start.

Vote,
John offered one solution, let me suggest a couple others. You can
create a separate file that shows all the changes between two Project
files that are descendents of one another. To do this use the "Compare
Project Versions" add-in. It does not work however on a master file with
inserted subprojects but you indicate your plan is large not necessarily
consolidated. If you don't have the add-in, you can get it by going to
the MVP website at: http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm
and looking at FAQ 36 - Compare Project Versions.

I also have a macro that compares project versions. It highlights
changes (directly in the Project field) between a base file and its
revision. If you would like more information, write me direct.
