Holidays in calendar & fixed duration tasks

I use MSP as a planning tool. I do not use the scheduling engine. I set the
tasks type to "fixed duration" and unmark effort driven. In this way however
MSP does not tell that I assign resources to a task on days the resource
calendar shows as unavailable (non working).

Is there nevertheless an elegant way to avoid assigning resources to a fixed
duration task by taking into account their non working time or do I have to
check their calendar every time I assign them?

Many thanks

Mark the day as non-working in your Project Calendar and the base calendar
you are using for your resources if they are different.

I don't understand your statement that you don't use the scheduling engine.
How can you have a plannnig tool that doesn't calculate plans? While you can
come up with some kludgy workarounds to minimize its effects, you can't turn
it off altogether except by saying recalculation is triggered manually and
then never triggering it. But if you do, what's the point of using
Project??? It's reason for existance is to take the task duration
estimates, resource availability, task linakges, etc and calculate an
optimum efficiency schedule for you - if you don't let it do its job for you
why bother using it at all? You can do everything you're getting in an
Excel workhseet at a fraction of the cost or with a paper calendar and some
markers almost for free.
